Having made a portrait of Rawsthorne in 1964 (in the National Portrait Gallery), Roy, who was deeply affected by Rawsthorne’s death in 1971, made a series of works entitled Elegy.

The Cambridge studio was smaller with less light than Essex. Working with clay over large armatures became almost impossible. Modelling on board in both high and low relief solved this problem.
