Roy used the opportunities presented by his first studio and the location to experiment with shape and scale. Forms become more simplified

The studio

The studio at GT. Sampford built by William Sutton and Roy provided space to both work and display. Light could be regulated which allowed the variation in form to be accentuated.

Throughout his life, apart from bronze founders, he worked alone.

The controversy that it caused resulted in it being removed and eventuality, destroyed!

Plaster

This figure is seminal in the beginning of Roy’s work which expresses the idea of simplifying the silhouette, viewing the work from one standpoint and emphasises a surface that relies on the direction of light.

It is intended that the viewer look down upon the work.

Roy was working on the idea that the silhouette of the sculpture was less important than the complexity of the internal forms
